Featherweight Diary

Diary Archive 2004

  • 30/07/04 - Repaired all the damage to CBF from last weekend, got in lots of driving practise until the batteries went flat. Started on new titanium armour for the front to reduce the ground clearence.
  • 29/07/04 - Work has begun on a new feather which will be an updated CBF with several major modifications that can't be made to CBF. But it won't be built for a while as the heavyweight has to come first.
  • 25/07/04 - Dave and Ed attended the Roaming Robots event in Aylesbury ( see report). In the evening I did something that I said I wouldn't do. I started thinking about a new featherweight.
  • 24/07/04 - Charged batteries and packed tools for tomorrows event in Aylesbury.
  • 23/07/04 - Finished repairs to CBF and tidied up the workshop. My new sheet of titanium arrived in the afternoon, this will make up new armour for the world champs.
  • 21/07/04 - Retyred a wheel and mounted it properly, still need to finish the right gearbox and reassemble for Sunday(25th).
  • 11/07/04 - Did a little more on CBF getting the front right wheel back in but not sorting the chain yet.
  • 10/07/04 - Finished rebuilding the left side drive and started the right and hit problems. The front wheel now touches the motor pinion and the chassis won't fit the rear wheel mount, I will have to have another go tomorrow although we may be working on the heavyweight tomorrow.
  • 09/07/04 - Picked up a new motor and gearbox for a weapon and some 3mm aluminium for armour.
  • 07/07/04 - Worked further on left gearbox and started putting wheels and chains back in, but found the left front to be very tight. Also got an e-mail from James Cooper (Rc Wars) to say that the date has changed yet again to 19th September. Not entirely happy about this as it has messed up my holiday from work and my return to uni.
  • 06/07/04 - Continued work on left gearbox made a minor alteration to the chassis so the gearbox will fit in. Also put a new table in the workshop.
  • 05/07/04 - Started a new job so time will be very short, only evenings friday and Sunday. Finished straightening CBF's chassis and started work on new gearboxes. These new boxes will be kept off the outer chassis rails to avoid the gears becoming misaligned.
  • 04/07/04 - Continued straightening the chassis, but haven't don much as ive been out most of the day.
  • 03/07/04 - Warwickshire College open day event, Dave and I went (see report). Dismantled CBF ,to repair some quite serious damage at the event, began straightening the chassis.
  • 02/07/04 - Charged the batteries in CBF and Bodger ready for tomorrows event in Leamington Spa.
  • 01/07/04 - Fitted power light and a chain tensioner. Did lots of test driving and pushing of bricks and tool boxes. CBF is working better than ever, but I don't intend to fit a weapon for this weekends event at Warwickshire College. In the evening Dave brought his feather over so the batteries can be charged for the weekend.

  • 30/06/04 - Finished the remaining sprocket and got all the wheels sorted. Maplins order also arrived.
  • 29/06/04 - Finished three of the wheels but had trouble with the last sprocket. Also remounted all the other components and repositioned the Rx switch. Charged Tx and Rx batteries. So far lightening has produced 380g of waste so the robot should be able to recieve a more powerful disk motor.
  • 28/06/04 - Fitted the remaining bearings and remounted wheels and gears. Set up the rear chains but cut the front chains two short so they must be remade. Started machining the remaining sprocket but decided to call it a night. Also ordered some parts from Maplins
  • 27/06/04 - Went to B+Q for some araldite started mounting the bearings and remounted the link as it kept falling out of the link mount.
  • 26/06/04 - Disassembled CBf and worked on spur gear lightening.
  • 25/06/04 - Got home from Uni and put all the robot stuff in the workshop.
  • 09/06/04 - My Brother texted me to say the stuff from Technobots had arrived at home.
  • 08/06/04 - Paul from Technobots phone to say they had run out of the bearings I ordered but will send a slightly different size, still should do the job.
  • 07/06/04 - Ordered some bearings and a power supply from Technobots.
  • 06/06/04 - Dismantled the drive on both sides of CBF to work on parts to save weight and set up new chain setup need to order some bearings will do that tomorrow.
  • 05/06/04 - Continued working on the spur gears now the front is finished.
  • 04/06/04 - More work on CBF from armour and disk mounts. Also worked on lightening the spur gears.
  • 03/06/04 - Both Turbulence and CBF will appear in the FRA World Championships in August which will be televised in October. This is what 4 years of work has been for and every effort will be put into getting two very good feathers for the competition.
  • 02/06/04 - Worked on front armour and disk mounts, lightening where possible.

  • 19/05/04 - Posted on the forum to say CBF won't be attending Newark as I have uni committments. Dave is still going with a featherweight.
  • 17/05/04 - Thought more about a new chain setup.

  • 28/04/04 - Came up with a new idea that will sort out the chain problems once and for all if I can find time to do it as it involves some major changes to the robot.
  • 24/04/04 - Finished the new wheel mount and did some test driving and then discharged the batteries as I don't plan to use the robot for about 2 months now until my exams and coursework for uni is finished. Also did some work on the armour and the link.
  • 21/04/04 - Got bored with revison so started to make a new wheel mount for the part of the chassis that was damaged at Debenham.
  • 20/04/04 - Entered CBF into the FRA world championships in August held in Manchester, see events page for more details.
  • 17/04/04 - Looked at CBF to see what upgrades I can do to it, also gave it a quick test drive. Went well until the right chain dropped, chain guides will be needed as I thought. I moved the front battery to the back with the other, this leaves the front free of anything and can be used for weapons space. Also decided that the motor I got from Jon won't do the job, I will either use a wiper motor or a gold.
