Turbulence Diary

Heavyweight Diary - Archive 2

  • 09/01/05 - Over the Christmas period we found that the pneumatics won't fit in as originally planned so the whole chassis is going to be widened by about and inch and a half.

  • 14/10/04 - Have been in contact with the team via e-mail as we are all at uni/college. The pneumatics system has been tested and is ready to be installed, just the mechanics of the flipper left and armour and we are finished.

  • 22/09/04 - Ed got some driving practise and showed of Turbulence to work and then returned it to Daves for further work. Also posted off a cheque for some more pneumatic bits so the system can be finished off.
  • 18/09/04 - Turbulence attended the RC Wars Championships as a display robot alongide Warhead.
  • 12/09/04 - Dave finished the right gearbox last week and this weekend saw the first test drive of turbulence at the Kettering event. It was very smooth and almost glided over the arena, so it was well worth buying the Vantec. We also got the ram back from Alan Wood who has been modifying it so it fits better in the robot and so that we get a better flow rate.

  • 20/08/04 - Regulator arrived and I went over to Dave's to do some more welding on the chassis and sort out some pnuematic bits.
  • 19/08/04 - Went to pick the chassis up, thanks to RC Wars and Wayne especially.
  • 18/08/04 - Took the chassis to our sponsor to be sandblasted. Got some parts from Jon for the World champs that will be used to swap for other bits we need for Turbulence.
  • 16/08/04 - Stripped Turbulence down to prepare for sandblasting the chassis on the 18th.
  • 15/08/04 - Second day of GGHW, left the robot at Eds as couldn't be bothered taking out of the car at Daves.
  • 14/08/04 - Took Turbulence not Maelstrom as the name has been taken, to GGHW to show off so far.
  • 10/08/04 - Met up at Dave's to work on the robot, fitted the speed controller and finalised positioning of pneumatic components. Tested the speed controller, which worked well apart from the mixing and reversing of channels but that is just a matter of changing some settings on the box. We have also been donated a table saw and grinder, many thanks to Jon's Grandad.
  • 09/08/04 - Just some pics of the heavyweight the drive is nearly finished.
  • 08/08/04 - Attended the Stoke Smash event(report), picked up a Vantec Speed controller from team scorpian which will give us much better control than the 4QDs which are now for sale if anyone is interested. We have 3 ncc-70s and a broken Ian Swann interface.
  • 05/08/04 - Dave has got one side of the drive working hopefully the other will be finished tomorrow. We have also agreed as a team to buy a Vantec at the weekend from the scorpian team.
  • 01/08/04 - Dave and Jon came over and we looked at one of the wheels and gears that Dave has machined, looks good and hopefully in the next two weeks we should have a working robot. We have also looked at getting a vantec speed controller which should offer better control than the 4QDs that we have at the moment.

  • 30/07/04 - Apparently most of the work in the gearboxes is now done so we may have a moving robot soon.
  • 20/07/04 - Dave phoned to say that he'd started work on the gearboxes and had some new ideas. We are going to try and have a variable ground clearence which works by changing the height of the gearboxes.
  • 19/07/04 - The chassis is nearly complete now and more serious work with the robot can proceed.
  • 11/07/04 - Dave and Jon came over and worked a bit more on the chassis.
  • 09/07/04 - Day off work so I poped some bits over to Dave's and took the designs for him to continue welding the chassis which is getting there. Dave has also scrounged some more pneumatic fittings for the robot.
  • 05/07/04 - Ive started a new job so should have some more money although less time. Jon is away this week also so we may not get anything done.

  • 26/06/04 - Jon and I went round to Dave's to sort out the gearboxes and layout of C02 bottles.
  • 14/06/04 - Jon finished uni today so when he gets home he can help Dave with the gearboxes.
  • 06/06/04 - Dave phoned to say he'd recieved the gears.
  • 02/06/04 - Got the invoice from Technobots so Dave should have the gears today or tomorrow.
  • 01/06/04 - Technobots e-mailed to say the gears are in so the should be with Dave soon, excellent news.

  • 29/05/04 - Dave has contiued with the welding and has added some more rails to strengthen the lower chassis. All the welds have been ground down and the chassis primed.
  • 20/05/04 - Added another two smaller buffer tanks to the design after some advice that our system isn't up to standard.
  • 12/05/04 - Recieved the motor and bits for a spare this afternoon and started cleaning up the bits of the spare.
  • 11/05/04 - Lee e-mailed to say the motors have been posted. Cheers Lee.
  • 08/05/04 - Dave phoned to say that a sponsorship deal with a pneumatics company has fallen through but he is going to finish the lower chassis welding today. Still no word on the gears will have to speak to Technobots this week.
  • 05/05/04 - Posted off a cheque to Lee (G-man) for a motor and spares.
  • 04/05/04 - Spoke again with Dave and worked more on the gearbox design down to the fine detail and now feel very confident with the design.
  • 03/05/04 - Dave has told me he has modified one of the fire extinguishers to be a buffer tank. Also ordered two bosch motors.
